About The Boy & His Ribbon

“What do you do when you meet your soul mate? No wait…that’s too easy. What do you do when you meet your soul mate and have to spend a lifetime loving him in secret?

I’ll tell you what you do.

You lie.”

REN

Ren was eight when he learned that love doesn’t exist—that the one person who was supposed to adore him only cared how much he was worth.

His mother sold him and for two years, he lived in terror.

But then…he ran.

He thought he’d run on his own. Turned out, he took something of theirs by accident and it became the one thing he never wanted and the only thing he ever needed.

DELLA

I was young when I fell in love with him, when he switched from my world to my everything.

My parents bought him for cheap labour, just like they had with many other kids, and he had the scars to prove it.

At the start, he hated me, and I could understand why.

For years he was my worst enemy, fiercest protector, and dearest friend.

But by the end…he loved me.

The only problem was, he loved me in an entirely different way to the way I loved him.

And slowly, my secret drove us apart.

Review

OK. WOW. Let’s start off with, I’m a huge fan of Pepper Winters, I admire her work through her ability to constantly push the boundaries with her writing. I think she writes a lot of stuff that’s emits so much emotion out of everyone whether it be good or bad. And all her previous work is evident of that, so you shouldn’t be surprised by some of things that go on in The Boy and His Ribbon. But I couldn’t have been so wrong, she definitely surprised me. This book is categorized as a coming of age, which is completely true, but Pepper holds nothing back in everything that Ren and Della go through as they grow up. The Boy and His Ribbon is also a bit taboo, there is a huge age gap (which doesn’t bother me), but there’s an another element, which will definitely leave you a bit out of sorts. So here’s my trigger warnings for the readers that have major NOs when it comes to picking a book up, there is an age gap and there is a taboo element.

Regardless of everything that I’ve said above, I did enjoy this book. Right now, I’m at a love-hate relationship on how it made me feel because of that one little element that’s a bit wrong, but their story isn’t an easy one. And yes some of what they went through is unrealistic, but come on people, this is fiction. It gets me sometimes when people get outraged by how unrealistic romance/fiction can be.  This isn’t your typical romance and it’s written in a way, where we see more of their past than the present, the pace is slower than I would have liked, but it didn’t stop me from devouring every single page. As you can tell, this book pulled me back and forth, shoot it just shoved me in all different directions.

We have Ren, sold into forced labor at the young age of eight years old and you can only imagine all the horrible things he had to endure. We get a glimpse of what he went through and when enough was enough, he ran. Leaving everything of that horrible place behind, but he had a stowaway he didn’t notice until it was too late to turn back. Baby Della or Della Ribbon. As much as he hated her, he grew to love and care for her. He tried to leave her somewhere, but thankfully this boy had a conscience. From that point on, we witness the various struggles they go through together, a child caring for a baby, surviving out their in the crazy world with very little on hand. They were fighters and learned that they could only depend on each other, to trust no one. Even though Ren ranaway from his hell, he continued to live in fear because of Della.

The older they become they continue to grow, they struggle, they work through feelings they don’t understand. TBAHS spans over 18 years, there’s a lot of ground to cover and it’s a true slow burn. Their love runs so deep for each other and for a while it was strictly platonic, brotherly and sisterly. But as they get older and understand more things, it shifts and they struggle dealing with it, they’re not related, but they’re each others only family. It’s a push and pull between these two, but never crossing the line for so many reasons. But eventually they reach a point where they’ve pushed too far.

Gosh, this book made me feel so many things, some of it even felt wrong, but oddly I was OK with it because “technicalities”? (I’m still thinking about it). I’ve never read a book like this, but I’m a huge Pepper Winters, I’ll read anything she writes. This is definitely her best work, but that’s always true with every new release that she puts out. I was completely invested in their story, it’s angsty, but of course they are, because TEENAGERS. We all remember those days and Della is definitely still that by the end of the book. A teenager, don’t forget it people. Even though this book ends with a cliffhanger, we don’t have to wait long for part two of this duet. For all of you that will take the plunge and read this, be ready to be emotionally invested in Ren and Della’s story, witness their struggle and everything they had to sacrifice. It’s not an easy story and with all the wrongs happening between them, how can there be a happy ever after for them?

I tell you, Pepper definitely knows how to write books that will forever be ingrained in your brain! I look forward to reading the conclusion of Ren and Della’s story.
