I currently have an iPad Air (4th generation).

Absolutely not! With Youtube and Tik Tok being one of my major resources when I ventured towards a digital journal, I’ve seen many on there that use other tablets besides an iPad. On here, I’ll mostly be talking about the iPad since that’s what I have.

Short answer, no. But it definitely makes things easier in the long run. I went through a journey of trying Pencil alternatives, but once I had the Apple Pencil in hand, I’m afraid to say that I’m never going back.

I used Goodnotes (link apple store) when I first embarked on this venture, but have switched to Noteful.
